Returns

To exclude light and draughts properly, curtains on track may need a return. This is a permanendy fixed section of the curtain that blocks out the gap between the end of the track and the wall. If the track is attached to the wall by short brackets, very little light and few draughts will get through, and so a return may not be necessary. If the brackets are longer, make a fixing for the end of the curtain with an eyelet screw. If there is no pelmet board, either fix a block of wood to the wall for this purpose or use a special track return kit. This includes an arm which goes at a right angle to the end of the track and into which the curtain is hooked. Alternatively, plastic track with a metal core can be bent back to create a return.

Directory of fabrics

There is a vast range of fabrics suitable for curtains and blinds. Before choosing one, it is a good idea to spend some time in a well-stocked fabric shop or department, during daylight hours. Take any fabrics you particularly like the look of to the window to see their colour and finish in natural light; artificial lighting alters colours considerably. The shop will give you a tiny piece to take away. You can order a larger sample of anything you really like, but you will probably have to pay a deposit for this.

When you are ready to buy your fabric, take your measurements and calculations with you in case you need to consult an assistant about quantities. Be sure to buy enough fabric in one go, rather than having to go back later for more, as colour quality may not be identical between batches.

The following descriptions will help you decide which fabric is right for the curtain effect you want.
