This is a modern addition to the city’s oldest paved street. Once known as Brouwers Straet because it meandered past Stephanus Van Cortlandt’s brewery, it was paved with cobblestones in 1657 in response to complaints by Mrs. Van Cortlandt about the dust raised by her husband’s customers.
