Although this is now officially part of the City University of New York, it is still most often called CCNY. This complex, built sixty years after the school’s founding, is built of Manhattan schist, the stone that underlies most of the island, excavated during the building of the first subway. It originally included an amphitheater, donated by Adolph Lewisohn, that was used for summer concerts by the New York Philharmonic. The stadium was demolished in 1973 to help make way for the huge modern buildings that dominate the western edge of the campus. Among its graduates are Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Mayor Ed Koch, physician Jonas Salk, and former Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter.
