Creating a Country-Style Decorating
Decorating for the holidays might begin with your tree. Ornaments can be quite costly, but it’s extremely easy to make your own from a few scraps of fabric. A country theme is always warm and inviting. If you use one pattern for all the ornaments, varying the look with different fabric patterns and colors, you can make enough to cover the tree in less than a weekend, and the cost is minimal.
Cover your tree with stuffed patchwork hearts and then make a few more to fill with dried lavender for little sachet gifts. If you have an old quilt that’s beyond repair, this is a great way to make it last forever. Cut up the good parts to turn into tree ornaments. For new fabric, use 100 percent cotton and prewash with a little bleach and fabric softener to give it a soft, faded look that will add old-quilt character to each ornament. If you like the look of quilting, you can make these hearts with prequilted fabric available in most yard goods stores. Or you can simply make stuffed patchwork heart ornaments without the quilting.
