In 1769 Copley married Susanna Famham Clarke, the daughter of a rich loyalist merchant, and began to invest in property on Beacon Hill, including a house facing Boston Common which he remodelled for his own use. One of the last portraits he painted in America was of Isaac Winslow, his wife's uncle, seated companionably with his second wife Jemima, who wears a sumptuous dress of French or Spitalfields flower-patterned silk. The Winslows' loyalty to the crown was shortly to lead to their exile in Nova Scotia.
