COVER-UP DESIGNS There must be 101 ways to cover a pouffe or a cushion but when it comes to the crunch I suspect that most people could come up with only two or three of them. Welcome, then, to Janine Westropp’s design sketch book. Here are more than 600 detailed drawings by the interior and architectural illustrator Caroline Aitken, with design ideas for cushions, lampshades, dressing-tables, occasional furniture and much more. The book costs £25 (plus £3.50 p&p), from Cover Up Designs, 9 Kingsclere Park, Kingsclere, near Newbury, Berkshire (tel: 01635-297981). A THE POWER OF COPPER BATTERIE Amazed? You certainly will be. And not just at the rows of gleaming copper pots, DINING TABLE DESIGN FOR SALE but at the thought that a team of NAD FAS volunteers spent some 1,200 hours cleaning 1,096 copper kitchen utensils for the opening of the recently refurbished kitchens at Petworth House in Sussex.
The kitchens are some of the most complete in the National Trust’s care, and show just how important food was in establishing and enhancing the authority of the family that lived there. The result is hugely impressive, and well worth a visit. GARDENERS’ DAY’S A whole crop of new gardening schools seems to have sprouted up lately, but one that is well established is Catriona Boyle’s Garden School in Gwent. Among the day-workshops on offer this summer are â˜Garden Trees for the Connoisseur’, with Malcolm Shennan, and â˜Designing with Perennials’, with Stephen Lacey, on June 27; â˜Around Your Garden in July’, with Bob Hares, and â˜A Year in the Life of Oxford Botanic Garden’, with Timothy Walker, on July 4; and â˜Beyond Colour – The Painterly Art of Planting’, with Nori and Sandra Pope of Hadspen House (above), on July 11. The workshops, which cost £39 for each day, run from about 10.30am to 3.30pm and include lunch, with wine and coffee.
