The Tool Shed

471 Main St, Waltham; (617) 647-7970

After 14 years of running a similar business in San Francisco, A1 Davis (no, not the owner of the Oakland

Raiders) moved east and opened this store specializing in secondhand tools. It’s become quite the hangout for area carpenters, plumbers, and Home Improvement do-it-yourselfers.

From a Craftsman planer ($380 new, $150 here) to the tiniest of socket wrench attachments (500 each), Al’s got it all. He rounds up his stock from personal appraisals, much like an estate reseller; there are even some new items, like a recently seen Makita power screwdriver, half-price at $45. And we haven’t even gotten to the bargain table yet!

This is where you can find lots of items at one low price, usually $3 or $4; these of course are in less-than-perfect condition, but still have lots of life in them. After all, how pretty do tools need to be? You won’t find any hardware supplies here, or garden tools either; what you will find is expert knowledge, both from A1 and his regular customers, who like to shoot the breeze. It’s an incredibly friendly, small-town atmosphere in the big city. Open Wednesdays through Saturdays only, from 1 to 5 P.M.
