The Banker’s Lamp
Another classic that’s destined to be with us forever is the banker’s lamp. The green-cased glass shade with white interior was designed to reflect light back onto the work surface, and the brass base with felt cushion never needs polishing. It has an old-fashioned brass pull chain and at $45 is a terrific item that performs well and looks good. They’re available through art supply catalogs and stores, and you can find the cheap version for under $20 at Kmart.
The Swing Arm Lamp
Only one lamp comes to mind when I think of lighting a bedroom, and that’s the classic, swing-arm, wall lamp. It’s not better looking than any other lamp, but it serves a terrific function. You can place it exactly where you need it for optimum reading in bed, it swings into whatever position you need it to be in, and best of all, it doesn’t take up room on your bedside table. The originals have brass fittings and take three-way bulbs. The shades vary from silk to paper and the really inexpensive copies come in different-colored enamels as well as brass plate. The latter version isn’t as sturdy as the good ones, but for a fraction of the cost, once it’s secured on the wall, it works just fine.
The Utility Cart
Another item available in art stores is called a Boby utility stand. This compact classic storage unit has pivoting drawers, shelves, and wells to accommodate materials from markers to rolled papers. It glides on five casters for stability and comes in white, red, or black hard plastic. It takes up as much space as a small night table and is perfect for holding items by the changing table in a nursery; keeping sewing and art and craft supplies intact; holding all sorts of kitchen utensils; organizing bathroom essentials; organizing small tools; and as a most versatile item wherever you want to store things efficiently. The original is around $350 but you can often find them on sale for half as much and occasionally for under $100 in discount places.
