England is rich in the works of artists of considerable attainment who yet remain virtually unknown to a wider public, Hangar home designs although the artistic cognoscenti avidly track down their works in the auction rooms. Nobody, therefore, should be surprised to learn that Thomas Heame and his landscape by David Morris (Reaktion Books, £25.00) is the first full-length study of this notable topographical artist, born in 1744. Hearne specialized in painting buildings in their landscape settings. Many of his subjects were romantic ruins and Gothic buildings. He also had a beguiling and assured touch in the depiction of architectural groups, as in the view of Elvet Bridge, Durham, shown above. A worthy monograph. BRITISH ANTIQUE CONSERVATORIES
