Small, formal and beautiful The word formal is fairly intimidating, Home addition design whether indicating the garb required at a dinner party or the kind of garden one expects to find at journey’s end. Happily, there’s not a single touch of intimidation in Creating Small Formal Gardens by Roy Strong (Conran Octopus, £17.99). The book has two sections: the first shows the elements of horticultural formality in photographs of extant gardens. Then we are shown a gallery of exquisite colour drawings by Gill Tomblin, of the author’s ideas for two dozen small gardens, from the conventional back yard of the average terrace house to a country rose garden and potager. Worthy salute.
