The cerulean shade in the couple’s bedroom was inspired by a visit to Cape Town artist Paul Senyol’s studio. A large painting of his hangs in the entranceway downstairs. Before we moved here, I researched South African design and discovered two artists that I really loved. One was Paul and one was Andrzej Urbanski. I subsequently discovered that they’re both based in Cape Town, represented by the same gallery and they’re best friends.

A striking feature on the exterior of the house are handmade Moroccan tiles. Long-time friends Samuel and Caitlin Dowe-Sandes of Marrakech-based Popham Design gave them to us as a house-warming present and it took us forever to piece them together, says Ashley.

But it wasn’t just the house that underwent a transformation. Landscaper Franchesca Watson rejuvenated the garden with fynbos and refinished

The kitchen forms part of the open-plan living area. The chairs on either end of the table are by French furniture designer Constance Guisset and the patterned wax-print school chairs from designer Sandalene Dale-Roberts. Highlighting the table is an unusual light fitting by Atelier Areti.

What makes Bakoven so special is that there are only about 40 houses clustered around two small beaches, and at the centre, is a wonderful eatery, Baked. We know quite a few of the families that live here and all the kids descend on the neighbourhood playground after school. It’s a close community, says Ashley.

The house is available occasionally for rental through Perfect Hideaways.
