OPPOSITE In Lulse’s ‘hall of womanly virtues’, alabaster-faced columns and pilasters alternate with pictorial panels; some depict locally grown fruit and flowers. THIS PAGE, ABOVE LEFT In this cabinet off the hall, the bust is of Luise. LEFT and BELOW The apse-ended salon, probably formerly a dressing room, is light and feminine, with mirrored walls and painted trails of flowers, birds and other animals (1766-76), allegories of womanly virtues and specimens of fruit, vegetables and flowers grown in the princely gardens and glasshouses. In these salons, Erdmannsdorff combined individual preferences with the taste of the time, many ideas conforming with the most progressive style of decoration then current in England, notably the celebrated interiors of Robert Adam. The Luisium was used as a private summer residence by the Anhalt family until the present century. Interior design ideas quotes During the time of the Cold War, it became a museum, but closed more than twenty years ago. Little progress was made on restoration until after German reunification, when the Kulturstiftung Dessau-Worlitz was established to pursue the objectives of an earlier state foundation of 1918-19. Starting from an architectural research programme on all the buildings of the Gartenreich, the new foundation opened the Luisium in the autumn of 1998, having restored not only the interiors but the surviving furniture, too.
