Lining fabrics

Coloured linings are available in a range of colours to match or contrast with almost every fabric. Although some are certified fade-proof, the safest choice is always cream or white. There is also a choice of qualities, the best having a certain amount of body that will survive cleaning.

Blackout, a special fabric for excluding light, is available in various weights, the heaviest of which can be difficult to work with. Thermal lining, known as milium, is coated on one side with aluminium and gives excellent thermal protection without adding bulk to curtains in the way that interlinings do.

Trimmings

Interesting trimmings can transform a handsome curtain into something really special. A ribbon, 1.5cm (%in) or more wide, adds interest and definition if you choose a contrasting colour and set it back from the edges of a curtain or blind. Braid is a looped and woven trimming available in a multitude of colours and designs, some of which are wonders of textile engineering and fiercely expensive. A braid with pompoms, sewn along the leading edges of a pair of simple muslin or sheer curtains, will completely transform them. Fringing, too, comes in endless variations of colour and design. One of its best uses is at the bottom of an Austrian blind or pull-up curtain ( 266 267). When the blind is pulled up, the fringe looks pretty against the light; when let down, it gives weight and definition to the bottom edge. A pelmet or blind with a shaped bottom edge can be made to look positively exotic if tassels are attached to hang off each downward point. Some readymade edgings incorporate beading. Alternatively, you can sew or string individual beads along the edge of a sheer curtain for added weight, detail and a delicate touch of colour. El
