Mixing the Paint

The correct method of mixing the various ingredients is as follows:

Place the white-lead paste in some kind of vessel which would hold three times as much. Gradually add small quantities of the linseed oil, constantly stirring until a uniform soft paste is obtained.

Next add the driers, and thoroughly incorporate it by stirring. Then add the rest of the oil and mix. Finally, add the turpentine and mix.

The success of proper mixing entirely depends upon vigorous stirring or breaking up of the pigment and the very gradual addition of the oil in small quantities at a time. The result

should be a smooth paint of the consistency of very thick cream, containing no appreciable lumps and with the whole of the various component materials thoroughly amalgamated.

LOOSE PUTTY MUST BE SCRAPED OFF THE FRAME BEFORE PAINTING IF THE GREENHOUSE IS TO BE WATERTIGHT.

This can be done either with the scraper as shown or with the glazier’s putty knife.
