Popular Craft Projects
Wreaths have always been a popular item and you can add distinction to your front door or indoors with a wreath of dried flowers any time of year. A quilted wall hanging is another nice project, and a great inexpensive substitute for artwork. There are several patchwork patterns, such as Around the World or Log Cabin that lend themselves to a wall hanging in bright or pastel colors, in prints or solids. These patterns are easy to cut and stitch together because they are made up of squares or rectangles.
Hot Product Watch: M&R Enterprises PCStitch allows needle-workers to create counted cross-stich patterns on IBM-compatible PCs. The program allows the user to choose from 390 thread colors, which have corresponding DMC, Anchor, and J&P Coats thread numbers, to create a pattern up to 500 by 500 stitches using up to 64 colors. Printouts can be generated in both color and black and white, with symbols representing colors.
There are many simple sewing projects that anyone can do and that will save you lots of money. By making things yourself you’ll be surprised at the satisfaction gained, but more than that you’ll be able to have many home furnishing items that are quite costly to buy. Slipcovers, for example are almost as expensive as a new sofa or chair. But the fabric cost is the least of it. Recently I amazed myself when I found a beautiful chair at our local landfill. The frame was intact but the upholstery was missing. However, there was a seat and a down cushion in perfect condition. I followed directions in a post oh upholstery and redid the chair with white linen. It is now residing in my living room!
