SEVEN INSTANT ENERGY REVIVERS

1. CRANK UP THE MUSIC

Listening to upbeat tunes gives you a vitality zap, scientists have found at the University of Toronto. Anything you love with a fast beat will have similar effects, whether it’s Michael Jackson or Mumford & Sons.

2. SIT UP STRAIGHT

Correcting your posture can help you get more oxygen into your body,’ says personal trainer Anna Ferguson. ‘Sit tall in your chair as if you have a string coming from the top of your head to your tailbone, with your stomach muscles pulled in and ribcage lifted. Breathe down into your ribcage to allow for a full intake of oxygen and always keep your legs uncrossed for good circulation. Take five minutes every hour to repeat this procedure.’

3. RE-PROGRAMME YOURSELF

Do you find yourself zoning out at the same time every day, whether that’s after lunch or at 4pm? Don’t give into it – get up and go for a re-energising five-minute walk or do some jumping jacks, so you’ll start associating that time of day with an energy high instead.

4. BRIGHTEN UP!

Black clothes may be slimming, but putting on vibrant colours is a simple psychological trick for providing an instant mental boost.

Oranges, yellows and reds are great for giving you a lift. If nothing else, at least put on a vibrant scarf or grab a bright bag.

5. SIP WATER

It’s tempting to reach for coffee, but too much caffeine can make you sluggish in the long term. Lethargy can be caused by dehydration, so rather down a glass of water instead. The Waterlogged app (free for iOS/Apple; Android) will remind you to guzzle enough to keep you alert through the day.

6. GET MOVING

A short, sharp burst of activity is ideal for an instant energy boost. Use the first half of your lunch break, or take a few minutes mid-morning or mid-afternoon, and try the 5 Minute Home Workouts app (free for iOS/Apple; Android) for a super speedy routine, or grab a rope and skip for five minutes.

7. SAY HELLO TO THE SUN

Ideally, try exercise or eat your lunch outside so you get a shot of vitamin D. It’ll lift your vitality levels and boost your mood, which can’t be achieved from those unflattering fluorescent lights in the gym or office.
