What makes a truly great interior today?

If, for you, it balances contrast with harmony, combines authentic, quality materials and craftsmanship and carries with it an imprint of personal, confident eclecticism, look no further than British brand Timothy Oulton.

Driven by a passion for blending time-honoured techniques and pure materials with a fearless quest for innovation, what began in 1976 with a small, family-run antiques shop has grown into a company that now boasts over 40 galleries worldwide, with ten in the UK.

The brand is arguably best known for the quality upholstery in its signature aniline-dyed leathers, each ofwhich undergoes several stages of complex hand-finishing to achieve its distinctive look and feel. But its creative remit extends much further than that. It now offers furniture of all kinds, including a full selection of lighting and home accessories.

Inspired by eponymous founder Tim Oulton’s lifelong love of antiques, yet conceived with a thoroughly modern perspective, collections are designed to suit any interior style, from sleek urban apartments and Victorian townhouses to cosy country retreats. ‘I try to bring history and artistry to classic pieces, giving them a contemporary and modern feel,’ says Oulton of his approach. What this means in practice is that every piece is meticulously made by hand using time-honoured techniques – from the hand-carving, traditional joinery and hand-tufting of furniture to the expert fashioning of optical-grade glass in its statement lighting.

In less assured hands, finding a common sensibility in such a wide and varied offering might be tricky: not so in the case of Timothy Oulton. Its founder’s eye for timeless, enduring design and commitment to traditional, hand-finished craftsmanship creates pieces that individually inspire and collectively work together to build a signature aesthetic that is more than the sum of its parts.

‘We have a point of view,’ says Oulton. ‘There is character and soul to what we do. The link to heritage, the designs – that combination is unique.’ Items can be mixed and matched across various collections and styles. This allows clients to create an interior in which every piece works harmoniously together, while reflecting an individual’s personal style.
